Last year, there was a tie for the top spot on the list. Harvard and Princeton University were at the top of the list as the best College in the U.S. This year they are tied, which isn’t much of a shock. Most people couldn’t tell you which was the best anyway and tend to assume the are interchangeable.

All the usual suspects are present on the list. There is a strong showing from colleges on the east coast and in the Ivy Leagues as expected. In addition, the list is dominated by private schools, which seem to universally be accepted as much better than public schools.

What I would like to see is the criterion used to select these schools. This data isn’t relatively available to the general public, but you would have to assume the breathe of academic programs offered matters, the strength of their programs, and the success of their students would all play a factor in selecting the best U.S. College in 2011.

Without a doubt, if you child attended or wanted to attend any of these colleges you would be a very proud parent. There is no doubt about this.

In fact, my 11 year old son has decided he wants to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which is a killer school. I can’t tell you how excited I am about this. He has stellar grades and test scores, but I know he still will need a little luck to actually get into the school. I just let him know that if he continues to apply himself he can get into this school. (Personally, I think he is a shoe in, but I am a little bias.)

Getting back to the topic at hand, the U.S. News and World Report offers sever more list surrounding colleges. This isn’t it. In fact, they rank the best schools for B students, historically black colleges and universities, the most diverse colleges and universities, the best value colleges, and even the best national liberal arts colleges as well. There are a few more, but this gives you an idea of the breathe of rankings they offer.

There is truly something for everyone in their list. It has to be tough to produce a list of this nature, but they did it anyway and I want to know what do you think about it? Is this just the same old list reproduced or does it truly rank the Best U.S. College in 2011?
