Online Electrical Permitting Requirements

Since I am an advocate of utilizing your resources, I have attached instructions on obtaining an electrical permit online (directly from the City of Chicago Website).

This streamlined process eliminates the need to stand in the long lines downtown or at your neighborhood satellite office.  So the next time you want to add electrical outlets, light switches, or light fixtures simply follow the instructions below.

Creating a Login ID:

If you are not currently using the on-line permitting system and do not already have a login id that was provided by the City of Chicago, you may create one yourself by visiting DCAP's website, and clicking the EPERMIT button. Click on the

"Electrical" link then click on "Create Account".

Enter information for the license holder NOT the electrical company.
The system MUST find a match for the license holder. Information you entered will be found on the right hand side of the screen. The match you are seeking will be found at the bottom of the screen.
If you do not find a match DO NOT PROCEED. Call 311 within the city limits or 312-744-5000 outside the city limits or contact DCAP short forms electrical counter personnel.
If a match is found select the match and proceed. A password will be emailed to you.

Applying for an Electrical Permit On-Line:

Proceed to DCAP's website.
Click on the EPERMIT button.
Click on "Electrical" link.
Enter your user name and password.
Click on "Apply for a Permit".
Choose "I am the architect/contractor". Choose CONTRACTOR-ELECTRICAL from the drop down. Enter your ECC or SE license number including letters. C numbers are stored as ECC.
Click Next.
In STEP 3 choose "Permit-Electrical Wiring" from the drop down. Fill in the electrical schedule.
You may pay one of 3 ways:

  1. By escrow account
  2. Via check, either in person at City Hall, 121 N. La Salle St., 9th floor, Short Forms Electrical Counter or
