Home Seller $1,000 Booze – A booze offer of $1,000 by home seller is causing a big stir in the real estate market. People selling real estate all over the country have been looking for ways to set their property apart from the crowd, a home seller from Illinois may have the formula, booze.
In a norther suburb of Chicago, a home seller is looking to turn the American obsession with booze into a home sale for their family. Melanie Gravdal and her husband of Glenview, Illinois, have come up with a very unique incentive for buyers to purchase their home. They are offering $1,000 in booze to the buyer of the home and have managed to create quite a buzz for their home.

As you can imagine, the real estate market is tough for sellers, even those real estate investing are feeling the pinch. Buyers are loving it because they know there is no rush when purchasing a home. Everyday, the values seem to go lower and lower, which means they are to pay less and less for a property.
Melanie Gravdal and her husband has been experiencing the pain of attempting to sell in this market for a while. In June of 2011, they put their 3 bedroom townhouse on the market hoping to sell it, but had received very little interest in the property.
The property at 1877 Prairie St., Glenview, IL is well located. It is in walking distance from many restaurants, shopping, parks, and more. It has been a very enjoyable place for them over the past few years for them and their 2 and 5 year old children.
However, the competition in the market is fierce. There are a wide variety of similar homes in the marketplace as well, so it is making it very difficult for the Gravdal’s to receive any prospects in the market.
In fact, since putting the home up for sale in June, they had only 2 viewings scheduled in seven weeks. Although it only takes one to make a sale, this wasn’t going very well for the home seller.
Therefore, they decided to try something different. The family decided to add some sale incentives to their home to attempt to woo a few more people into the property and hopefully sale it. This is when they talked to their Realtor and ask about some ideas to boost traffic.
The group gathered and they thought it would be a great idea to integrate the main attraction to the townhouse into their marketing. Since the home was located directly across the street from a bunch of bars and restaurants, they decided to do a bit of cross promotion with them. This is how the idea of offering $1,000 in booze and food came about.

The home sellers are offering $1,000 in booze and food to the buyers of their property. Grandpa’s Place, bar and grill, is located directly across the street from the home. This is the location the new buyers will gain the $1,000 gift certificate to once they purchase the home.
Although this home incentive is a bit different than most we have covered or even heard of before, it seems to be working. There is a serious buzz around the home in the local market place, but only time will tell if it will actually pan out into a sale for the family who is looking to relocate to California soon.
Adding sale incentives to a property is nothing new in the marketplace, especially in down real estate markets like we are experiencing. Home sellers have to do whatever they can to get the attention of the buyers. Some typical ideas are a new television, furniture, even a car, but this is the first time I have ever heard of booze being offered.

I think Buyers are smarter now than they have ever been. I don’t expect this to work. I think many buyers will see through this scheme and will weigh out the costs of buying it. They may end up selling it because it gets a lot of attention given how strange it is, but I don’t think someone will buy the house just to get booze.
If it does happen, consider me the first person to change my view of the market.

I think giving away 1,000 in food and booze in itself will not be the answer. But the publicity it has created will. Interview any buyer and ask, “Ok, if we offered you 1,000 in Whiskey would you reconsider buying the house?”. I think the answer is obviously no, but the effect of chatter on the web may spark an interest in the property due to the increased exposure. To double the effect, it may be a smart move with a related manufacturer such as Budweiser, Bacardi, Coors or others in the industry to purchase the house and get a new story out to the press. “Anheuser-Busch helps out local home seller in need of a sale”. And after, sell the property and donate the proceeds to local charities.
