J Crew Canada Pricing Controversy – The controversy over pricing in Canada of J Crew products has people outraged. The issue is one of paramount importance to J Crew as they are looking to make a serious market push into the Canada and their market.

J. Crew is a popular retailer in the United States. Recently, the preppy fashion chain looked to burst into Canada and make a market on the people. They ended up making a market, but it was on the wallets and pocket books of the people, not their hearts as they had planned.

As expected, Canada welcomed J Crew into the country with open arms. Lines circled the building as people rushed into take advantage of wearing the preppy wears of the company. However, the pricing controversy that emerged has left the people with a sour taste in their mouth.

The J Crew Canada pricing controversy is based on the fact the retailer is charging more for their products in Canada, than in the United States. In fact, it seems prices in Canada are 15 to 30 percent higher than in the United States. This amounts to a significant price hike on the Canadian people and is really dampening the excitement of having J Crew in Canada.

Many Canadian consumers feel the pricing of J Crew products should be the same as those in the United States. However, the J Crew company doesn’t seem to think this way and is backing their position in the pricing controversy.

J Crew isn’t sitting on their hands during the pricing controversy. In fact, they are firing out with a response from their President Jenna Lyons confirming they are taking the pricing controversy very serious and want to get things right with the people of Canada.

“The change in cost for merchandise purchased in our stores and online as necessary to keep pricing consistent with our new — and expanding — retail operations,” the letter said.

“However, we understand your concerns and will continue to work to provide you with an excellent online shopping experience. For J. Crew, the reception to our new store in Canada has been nothing short of extraordinary,” the letter also said.

The J Crew Canada pricing controversy is really catching a lot of media attention which is fueling the disappointment from the people. However, when you view the website to make a purchase in Canada, you will notice there are significant differences between Canada and the United States.

In one example, the difference were as much as 40 percent when compared to the United States cost after taxes and shipping were included. This is significant and enough to justify a pricing controversy.

A pare of Cafe Capri plaid wool pants were $138 in the United States, but $160 as the Canadian price. This is a 15 percent difference. However once you add the shipping and taxes, the United States price comes out to $159, but the Canadian price hits a whopping $223. This balloons to a 40 percent difference in pricing.

Many retailers have a policy of bumping their prices in Canada, but not many have such a drastic difference in pricing. This could be a serious problem with J Crew as they look for an opportunity to expand their global brand and move into the Canadian market.

What do you think about the pricing difference J Crew is implementing in Canada? And what do you think it will do to their business and brand in Canada? - J Crew Canada Pricing Controversy

    I won’t buy anything from J Crew.
If they want to make inroads into the Canadian market they need to court us before they screw us. With their attitude I’ll never get into their pants.

J Crew can go screw themselves. I do not agree with a price ripoff for the sake of fashion.

I will certainly not buy anything. Over $100 for a single pair of pants is rediculous in it’s self, I pay less than that for shoes. Why should we pay mroe, our money is at about par, and we have a free trade agreement with th estates. There is absolutely no reason it should cost any different at all from the states.

Sadly, and invariably typical America myopic operating procedure. If we don’t shop there, they will go far, far away.

I always looked at there website and bought a few sale items from time to time with free shipping, but after seeing this I will no longer buy from them. I would rather put my $$ into canadian stores and small local business.

It’s a simple concept- CHARGE TOO MUCH YOU LOSE CUSTOMERS. Any fool (even those without a marketing degree) knows that customers treated with contempt take their business to another supplier. J.CREW won’t be missed..see y’all.

BOYCOTT J.CREW >> so they understand we are competent shoppers…
having said so.. we should truly review our buying ways.. many USA products are still overpriced.. and we continue to support them..
from cars to simple books/ magazines..gaz prices !….. with a par dollar.. we should have better pricing

but we canadains are pacifists… jcrew and others will slowly take over all retailimng in canada…

    happy shpping…

We do have a higher cost of living in Canada than the U.S. and with many taxes and import cost; even with free trade (which really isn’t free) there will be a price difference. J Crew has just decided to be greedy. The U.S. economy is tanked and U.S. companies see Canada as a saviour. If you look at companies who have been in Canada a long time; Naturalizer, Walmart, Sears, their prices are higher then in the U.S. and consumers don’t say anything. If you look at companies like Mexx, who have prices tags with prices from other countries–do the math– we pay more. Until we stand up and start talking with our pocket books things will not change.

It’s completely unconscionable that J Crew would gauge Canadians to this extent. I say extent, since we’ve got a long history of not only being overcharged, but accepting the absurd rationalizations. Simply put, we pay more because we will. It’s become a part of our identity. While I am encouraged that many have chosen to ‘boycott’, I’m sure J Crew will flourish. People are dying to buy into identity upgrades.

I like the idea of buying local as an ethical and substantially rewarding alternative. That said, it’s becoming harder and harder to do. Try to find a shirt made in Canada. I used to buy from one particular company for my undergarment needs. Not for fashion or style, for function and because this company was based in and its’ garments manufactured in Canada. That is no longer the case. Now my underwear is made in China at a fraction of the cost. Do you think the price has changed? Think again.

I would like to retain some sense of optimism. However, it’ll be sad to see all those cheesy Zeller’s signs replaced with Targets. As it stands, it’s hard to find a decent parking spot at most Wal-Mart’s. Wal-Mart is dishing the philosophy “save money – live better”. It’s truly a war of words.

    Sad, really.

I was really excited that J Crew was coming to Canada. Their merchandise is expensive as it is in the States, I am really disappointed with the pricing and will not be purchasing anything from the them in Canada – It’s not worth it. But maybe when I visit the States.
