Recently, Macy’s announce they would be coming to Canada via the Internet. Reaching an agreement with third-party management service FiftyOne to manage their Canadian endeavors.
This marks a very big move on the part of Macy’s, but shows the respect and potential growing power of the market in Canada. Many companies in the United States are struggling to find the growth the need in order to succeed. The economy is sputtering along at best and they are looking for ways to improve earnings.
Many American businesses are looking to open up in Canada to find the additional growth they are looking for these days. In fact, there is a nice stream of businesses moving north of the border and coming to Canada for just this very reason. These are companies like Target, Khol’s, Victoria’s Secret, Dollar Tree Enterprises and more.

Speaking of the pricing controversy with J Crew, it seems Macy’s might experience some of this pain in their move to Canada even if it is all online. First of all, you have to deal with the pricing fluctuations when dealing with the Internet model Macy’s is pursuing. This is something they have been discussing and working on them over the past week. However, there is a bigger issue out there. The issue they are running into is calculating shipping cost similar to what is happening with J Crew.
The shipping issues aside, many believe this is a good move on the part of Macy’s and other United State companies. The idea of building a relationship with Canadian consumers before they establish a retail location is a great decision. It allows Macy’s to start building trust with consumers in Canada before they end up rolling the dice on purchasing retail space.
