BOOK REVIEW:
THE MAGIC OF THINKING BIG
There are literally dozens of
books on the market right now that stress the importance of the power of
individual thought. This book continues in that tradition and does a
tremendous job of providing a program to get the most out of your job,
marriage, family life and community.
In the opening chapter, Schwartz
states: "Belief, strong belief, triggers the mind to figuring ways and
means and how-to. And believing you can succeed makes others place
confidence in you." I think, intuitively, we all recognize the truth of
the above statement, yet few of us act in the appropriate manner to
sustain that belief. According to Schwartz, doubt, disbelief, the
subconscious will to fail, the not really wanting to succeed, is
responsible for most failures. How many times have we told ourselves, "I
didn't really think it would work out" or "I had doubts before it even
started?" Schwartz writes that the
"Okay-I'll-give-it-a-try-but-I-don't-think-it-will-work" attitude produces
failures.
In the next chapter, the author
goes on to talk about curing oneself of "excusitis" the failure of
disease. The author believes that this is the cause of all failures and
that most average people have at least a mild case of it. Intelligence
excusitis is one form of this mind-deadening thought disease and it can be
beaten in 3 ways: 1) Never underestimate your own intelligence and
overestimate others 2) Remind yourself daily that your attitudes are more
important than your intelligence and 3) Remember that the ability to think
is of much greater value than the ability to memorize facts.
In the following chapters, the
author then goes on to discuss ways to: "build confidence and destroy
fear," "learn how to think big," "how to think and dream creatively,"
"stressing the importance of knowing that you are what you think you are"
and "managing your environment." The book does an outstanding job in the
discussion on "turning defeat into victory." The author gives an example
with three individuals Mr. Skid Row, Mr. Mediocre and Mr. Success. These
3 individuals are virtually the same in all respects except for one -
their individual response to defeat. Mr. Skid Row gets knocked down and
fails to get up again. When Mr. Mediocre gets knocked down, he crawls away
and runs so far in the opposite direction to ensure he would never take
another beating. When Mr. Success gets knocked down, he bounces up, learns
a lesson, forgets the beating and moves upward.
The author closes with a chapter
dedicated to using goals to promote individual growth. The author prompts
the reader to develop a 10 year planning guide in the categories of work,
home and the social aspect. He also urges the reader to make a 30 day
improvement guide and to continue developing them throughout the remainder
of one's life.
When you surrender yourself to
your desires, when you let yourself become obsessed with a goal, you
receive the physical power, energy and enthusiasm needed to accomplish
your goal. |
