I applaud First Lady Michelle Obama for taking a stand on such a touchy subject-Childhood Obesity! I commend her for taking action despite the backlash that may come from it. I agree that we all have a role to play in order to win the race against childhood obesity. Let’s start teaching our children young to head off many of the illness that stem from being overweight. So many young adults have diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol at the peak of their youth.
If we all make a commitment to “Pass the Baton” each day then slowly we will raise up a generation of health-minded adults. So how do you “Pass the Baton”? Its easy! Make an effort to help at least one young child within your reach to live a healthier lifestyle.
Here are some Health Nuggets to get you started:
1. Make it fun! Words such as healthy, vegetable or exercise may make your child cringe so make it tasty, make it fun and they will be begging you to get involved!
2. Get them moving. Activities like kick ball, Hopscotch, Tag or bike riding are perfect for children to engage in.
3. Lead by example. Have a fun fit day with your community or youth group. Your children desire to mimic you.
4. Teach don’t preach. Educate your children about proper nutrition and exercise with hands on activities. They will be likely to listen if you engage them on their level.
5. Speak words of affirmations. Building their self confidence will allow them to make better choices and to feel good about themselves.
So I bet you are wondering how can I get my kids to enjoy exercise or healthy foods. I barely can get them to turn off the TV, stop texting or playing the Wii. Well do not despair Shaun T’s Kids Fit Club is the solution! It provides the kind of fitness that children will enjoy. They will enjoy it because it is fun! Simple dance moves set to rousing music will get children
moving and sweating without making them feel like they are doing dull repetitious exercises. Kid workout videos must be created for kids, not simply repackaged and re-titled.
No matter what the age, start now pass the baton and make a difference one child at a time!
