In 2010, the Census.gov website boasts that the census tracking form will be the shortest in history. Ten questions, ten minutes! That’s it, that’s all. Why is this big issue? Why would the government want to advertise, that the most important venue (the census tracking form) for getting information to our government so that well deserved services reaches the needed communities, will be the shortest form in history? I’ll tell you why. It’s been a historical fact, that many people evade the census when they come knocking’ at their door, for several reasons:
- Too many people in the household (that’s a landlord concern, not census)
- No time (then there’s no time to complain about what you won’t get)
- Earning more than what was reported to a subsidy program (that’s the programs concern, not the census)
- Less people in the household (that’s a concern of the program that was reported to, not the census)
Listen, the census does not come for any other purpose, but to track the number of people in a household. This information is used for a number of reasons:
- To formulate demographic data
- To keep track of the population
- For the services needed to reach a community that is deemed most deserving of them
- It affects the number of seats your state occupies in the U.S. House of Representatives
- Organizations use the data to advocate for causes
- Organizations use the data to track rescue disaster victims
- Market research
- To find workers in a particular trade for particular government jobs
- To prevent diseases from spreading
Data promotes a better infrastructure. According to the census website, the information
the U.S. Census collects aids in determining how a little over $400 billion dollars of federal funding is spent
each year on infrastructure and services. The following are just a few examples:
- Hospitals
- Job training centers
- Schools
- Senior centers
- Bridges, tunnels and other public-works projects
- Emergency services
(U.S. Census Bureau, para. 2.).
The Director of the United States Census Bureau, Robert M. Groves, states, “Just like we can’t survive without roads and bridges, the country doesn’t function well without an updated Census to distribute funds to areas that most need them and to support community decisions about their own future.” Filling out the census form is a representation of each individual, telling the government what is needed in their communities. Read on about one organization used the census data to advocate a very important matter in their state.
“The Organic Consumers Association used census data to lobby the EPA, Environmental Protection Agency, to halt testing dangerous chemical on low-income children in Florida. The testing was eventually stopped due to the petition, which contained information provided by the census.” What if there was testing going on that was harmful to your children, and you provided information to the EPA to stop the testing, but they denied the petition you provided, because there was not enough crucial evidence to support the claim that the testing was in fact harmful, as a result of incorrect census data? What a tragic shame that would be. All we need to do is get the form, fill it out, and send it off with prayer, that enough people are doing the same thing.
Take action in your state, your community, and most importantly, at home. Fore more information, visit the U.S. Census Bureau’s website.
