Over the last few years, I have been thinking to myself that it is time to get involved with the world and specifically my community around me. As I enter further and further into my 30′s, I am realizing that it is time for me to give back and the desire to do so grows more and more each day.
The reason why philanthropy strikes me is because of something my parents use to say to me all the time. And this was that you must be a benefit to your community and not a burden. In fact, you are to constantly check yourself to ensure that you are giving more than you are getting from your community and the greater world around you.
With these thoughts in mind, I am realizing that I am not holding up my end of the bargain and must do more to help others that might be less fortunate than I am. Now, if you were on the inside of my life, you might think that I need help. And this may be true, but I still have the capacity to take care of myself, but others don’t have as many blessings as I do, so the need or desire to share is in me. This is something that I must do.
Therefore, when faced with the question of why philanthropy, I feel like the answer is because it is necessary. I am not a very religious person, but heard it said that service is the price you pay for the space that you take up on earth. Well, everyone doesn’t have the time to give with volunteering, but being a philanthropist is more than just volunteering. It is organizing people, setting up institutions, and donating money to make these things happen and to make positive things happen in people’s lives everyday.
This is the reason that I am on a pursuit of wealth, so that I can greatly impact the world around me with my actions, connections, and dollars.
